Asier Pierrick Dipanda Dicka scored in fourth consecutive match to gift Shillong Lajong FC 1-0 victory against Churchill Brothers on Sunday.
In the evenly contested seventh round game, Dicka’s goal in the 51st minute turned out to be the difference between the two teams. Thangboi Singto started with the same side for fourth consecutive home game while Churchill made two changes with Ghanefo Kromah and local boy Ban Nongkhlaw coming in for the injured Fulganco and out=of favor Surchandra Singh.
The away side seemed to be more likely to break the deadlock in the first half as they created some mouth-watering chances for their strikers. Shillong crowd had their heart in the mouth in the sixth minute when Dicka seemed to have suffered a head injury. However, the dangerous striker soon recovered and showed no signs of injury.
The first clear chance of the game in the tenth minute went begging as neither Dicka nor his striking partner Rupert Nongrum could reach the through ball by Isaac. Churchill responded through Wolfe as his shot came off the crossbar.
There were not many clear chances to talk about in the first essay as the two teams went at 0-0 into the breather.
The second half saw the home side showing urgency and it took just six minutes for Dicke to get his sixth goal of the campaign. Churchill goal keeper Priyant Singh failed to hold on an attempted through ball and the Cameroonian was quick to pounce on the loose ball and unleash a powerful shot.
Churchill then took the onus to attack as the home side seemed to have parked the bus. However, Priyant wonderfully timed his rush-out to deny Dicka from doubling the lead, keeping his team in the game. In the 69th minute, Wolfe spilled a good chance by hitting his header on the turf from a favorable position.
The Goans showed urgency towards the closing stages but that was not enough for them to find an equalizer. The fourth consecutive win took Shillong to 12 points from seven games. They were placed fourth in the table after the match.
On the other hand, Churchill Brothers remained at eighth spot and will continue their North Eastern tour as they visit Aizawl FC next in what should be an interesting clash.
